How Armin Braunsberger Built a Global Web Design Agency

Armin Braunsberger

Location: Denmark

Started using Squarespace: 2016

Title: Designer & Consultant

Armin Braunsberger didn’t set out to become a web designer. His early work focused on video, branding, and multimedia. Once he discovered Squarespace, he quickly realized the platform could unlock a new level of efficiency and creative control for his growing agency.

Now based in Denmark, the Circle Platinum Partner and Community Leader leads Braunsberger Media alongside his wife and business partner, Gloria. They’ve completed more than 1,000 projects for clients around the world.

In this interview, he shares how Squarespace Marketplace helped them go global, what it takes to build trust digitally, and the design philosophy that keeps him inspired.

Take us through your journey from starting Braunsberger Media to where the agency is today.

We started Braunsberger Media back in 2011 in Salzburg, Austria, as a multimedia production firm that handled video productions, graphic design, brand development, and many strategic marketing tasks. But web design was the fastest-growing field, and we decided to invest more into that. As the complexity of the projects increased, our dependence on external developers did as well. This wasn't ideal, and one day a former team member asked me to his desk to show me this exciting new system from the US—Squarespace. It gave us back the full control of the website project.

How has your experience selling on Squarespace Marketplace evolved over time?

Typically, an agency starts with local and then national clients. After getting more experienced with Squarespace 5 back then, I applied for the Squarespace Experts listing directory on the Squarespace website. Then, something exciting happened. We began receiving requests from different countries. This kept growing, leading us to focus even more on Squarespace. Now, we have completed more than 1,000 website projects, and Squarespace Marketplace was a real success story for us, and I'm very grateful for it.

The workflow with clients from all over the world is truly special. Before going international, I couldn't imagine how diverse our client base would become. Squarespace Marketplace connects us with clients from fashion, tech companies, AI startups, celebrities, bands, and artists. Every project is different, but it's great that they are all united by Squarespace tools. The Marketplace workflow is not just beneficial for us as a professional agency—that’s what I often tell potential clients during the first call—it provides massive benefits for the client as well, with a secure project payment workflow, the project chat, and file management.

How can you be sure that a designer is reliable and really does a good job? That’s a strong selling point when I can refer to hundreds of verified five-star reviews from previous Marketplace projects, giving clients the confidence to put their website in our hands. We adapted so well to this workflow that I often onboard new clients that come through referrals or through our websites, directly into this Marketplace environment just because it's convenient.

As a highly experienced designer, what motivates you to continue growing, professionally and creatively?

Together with my wife Gloria, who happens to be a great business partner and strategist, we built the agency team with very high ethical standards, where I believe it's not just about designing a beautiful website or a nice-looking appearance. All our work really has the goal to help clients push their business further.

I think nothing excites me more than when I hear from clients that their new website really made a significant impact on their growth. Taking a comprehensive approach to design and performance, we spend a lot of time keeping ourselves up to date with technical evolutions, new trends, and new design and development tools. And I guess I can be really thankful that this is something that I still really enjoy doing.

What sorts of design projects do you gravitate toward, and which do you want to work on more of in the future?

What I really love about web design is that it's not just about designing something good-looking, but also about creating something functional with workflows, features, and movement. My first job was as a camera operator, so I grew a sense for visual storytelling, and this is something I enjoy a lot with websites as well, thinking of a user journey in the vertical and horizontal approach. I think my design philosophy is constantly in motion.

What is your favorite Squarespace tool or feature?

One of my favorite tools is the Squarespace blog or shop module in combination with summary blocks because there is so much room for customization and filtering across the website. I can adapt this in such a versatile way to many projects, like showing related articles for certain topics or best-selling products.

What are the perks and challenges of running an agency with an international focus?

I used to travel a lot to client meetings by car. Now, I find that doing mostly virtual meetings with clients in different countries or on different continents is a better experience for me—especially after relocating from Austria to Denmark. I think the challenge in this environment is building trust in a digital way, which requires finding ways to present our services and expertise on point, because there is not much time to pitch our story. We enjoy an international client base because it's so exciting to operate in different markets and we are more protected from national market eruptions.

How do you make the most of Circle membership?

I think for me, it's mostly about the people and the positive environment among Squarespace professionals and entrepreneurs, where I've fostered friendships and can rely on support when seeking solutions, customizations, or feedback from colleagues.

I really enjoy my role as a Community Leader because the community also gave me so much support. I am happy to jump into the Circle Forum from time to time and help other people with their website. Sometimes it's even hard for me to keep track of all the new features and platform improvements. The Circle Forum is certainly the first place to stay up to date.

Additionally, Circle offers another great incentive: earning commissions when clients sign up for Squarespace, as well as access to valuable educational content.
